“Mercer Mayer has been writing and illustrating books for children for more than forty years. His most recognized character, the lovable and charismatic Little Critter(R), was born in 1975 in the book "Just for You". Mercer's Little Critter has since starred in more than two hundred books and sold over one hundred and fifty million copies”.

"Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid," says Mercer. "Now that I'm a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like."

Little Critter gets so frustrated and angry that he decides to  run away. Just as he is leaving the house, Little Critter's friends stop by to ask him to play baseball. He asks his Mom for permission and she says yes. His mood changes quickly and he runs off with his friends, telling himself he can run away another day if he is still so mad.

Poor Little Critter really tries to remember what he is suppose to do but it can be very difficult when you're little.

This book has  Little Critter's mouse in it. I thought the mouse was his friend but I read somewhere that it is actually his pet. Pet or friend, it is fun to search and find the mouse on each page.

When the girls were around one to two years old, I just read the book to them. As they got older we searched for the mouse and talked about the pictures. Here, Little Critter is making a big mess with the toothpaste!

Oh, oh, Little Critter is in trouble. Look at Mom's face. She is very angry.

Where is the mouse?

I think the mouse is trying to help out with making the bed.

One of the first series of books I read to my grandchildren was the little critter books by Mercer Mayer.  Once we snuggled up on the rocking chair with a favorite blanket we would look at the cover and talk about the picture. I read the title and the name of the author. Now that they are older (three and four years old), I have them repeat the title, authors name and illustrator's name after me. They are just so smart. They can tell me the author's names of their favorite books.

Mercer Mayer's illustrations are wonderful. They are full of detail and colour. The wording is short and simple for even the very young to understand. Once they are ready to learn to read, these books will be ideal too.

We don’t just read these books we use them to talk about colours and feelings. The girls found it absolutely delightful to search for Little Critter's pets on each page. Where is the little mouse? Or where is the grasshopper and spider. Sometimes it was a little challenging but that made it even more fun.

Just look at the concentration on his face. We like to count the number of times Little Critter has his tongue out.

My granddaughters giggle when we read this book because it is hilarious. They can brush their HAIR. They don’t have fur like Little Critter.

Seriously though, I like the book because it helps them want to do things all by themselves like Little Critter. Self reliance is a good thing to start as soon as possible don’t you think?

So Little Critter can do almost everything by himself.

But even big boys or girls still need someone to read a bedtime story to them.
