In this particular version, Max and Molly, two adorable pigs are tired and hungry travelers. The come to a village hoping that some kind people will give them something to eat and a place to rest.
What Molly and Max didn't know is that these villagers weren't kind. They were stingy and mean.
"EEEEK! shouted Mr. and Mrs. Ratfink.
"Eeeek!" shrieked their little baby too.
"Eeeek!" shrieked their little baby too.
"Strangers are coming!" yelled Mr. Ratfink.
"They'll want us to share what we what we have with them."
"Eeek! squealed Baby Ratfink.
"Let's hide our food. Let's close our shops," said the butcher.
Poor Molly and Max find the village deserted so they decide to ring the village bell.
The villagers arrive and inform the little pigs that the bell is for emergencies only. Max tells them that there is an emergency - there is no food in this village.
Molly says it is time to make stone soup.
This intrigues the villagers as they have never heard of it before. That is because it is a secret informs Molly but they are willing to share it.

They start with boiling water then add stones that they scrubbed alot. This makes the villagers really curious.
"Mmmm," she said. "Stone Soup is very good plain. But it would taste even better if we could make the fancy kind."
"How do we do that?" asked the Mayor.,
"Sprinkle pepper, salt and herbs, " said Molly. "let it boil undisturbed,"
I have those things," said the Mayer's wife. "I'll be right back."
As Molly and Max list the ingredients of the soup, different villagers bring the food to add to the soup.
"Yay!" cheered the Mayer. "It's time to taste the soup." He snatched up a spoonful of soup and tasted it. "This is the most delicious soup I've ever had!" said the Mayer. "And to think that it's made with nothing but stones and water. Amazing!"
They didn't just have soup, the villagers brought bread, fruit, salad, cider, cakes and pies. They ate and laughed and danced long into the night. And when the feast was over, the innkeeper asked Molly and Max to stay in his finest room.

Unfortunately, I could not find anything about Marilyn Sapienza on the net. It was very frustrating.
I can't remember where we got this book but it certainly has turned out to be one of our favorites.
