ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATIONS AND WRITING

The story is written simply and in rhyme which is always a delight for us to read. Of course it is a mystery why Wilma is green. There is a surprise ending. So enjoy!

Tedd Arnold has a very unique style. He layers colour over colour in watercolour paint. He does it this way to create vibrant multi-dimensional colour. Once he has the colour the way that he wants, he adds texture by "scribbling" on top of the paint with coloured pencils.

But it isn't just the colour and texture that make his work recognizable. His characters all have those round bulging white eyeballs, (that word, eyeballs, always make my Granddaughters laugh) with the small black dot in the center.

At first glance, the watercolour and colored-pencil artwork in bright yellows, greens, and lavenders give the book a cherry image. 

Once we started reading it, I thought is was kinda sick  but the kids thought it was hilarious. 

This yellow, bug-eyed spider appears jolly, but is in fact a selfish and crafty creature who lures bugs into  her sticky web then eats them. "She snagged a caterpillar/ and asked him, 'What's your name?'/ He said, 'My name is Lester./ I'm handsome as can be.'/ Said the roly-poly spider,/ 'You look like lunch to me.'" 

She eats bee's knees, sticks a straw in a beetle for beetle juice, and creates a crunchy shoefly pie. Her appetite catches up with her when she gets stuck in a water spout.

Try singing the words of this funny picture book to the the itsy bitsy spider. My girls love it when I sing the book.

Twenty-six aspects of children's nightly rituals are illustrated: "G giving hugs" shows an African-American mother embracing a delighted child; "T tucked in tight" is a closeup of an Asian-American toddler. Affection, emotion, and the loneliness that settles in when a child is about to let go of day to slip into slumber are clearly and strongly depicted. Hays's double-page, realistic, full-color pictures are simplified and focus on each youngster. An outstanding book for one-on-one sharing.

HUGGLY TAKES A BATH Written and Illustrated by Tedd Arnold

When I was flipping through books in the store, I was quickly attracted to this brightly coloured book. The big eyed green monster looks so adorable that I could not resist taking this book home with me.

The silly hero of Arnold's Huggly book series is not scary, even if he is "The Monster Under the Bed." He emerges from under the "people child's" bed, goes into the bright bathroom to find some snacks but instead gets into all kinds of trouble. 

Huggly takes a bite out of the soap bar and eats some toothpaste. My Granddaughters laugh when he uses the toothbrush to clean between his toes. Faith says,"he is so silly. Isn't he grandma?"

Finding himself in the bathtub, Huggly manages to fill it with water then starts to add wonderful slime which is actually different kinds of liquid soap. Soon he finds himself in a tub full of bubbles which is even better than his slime pit back home. 

Suddenly the people child enters the washroom and Huggly races back to hide under the bed again.
